Email Directory — Every Email Benecaster Sends
A single table of every email Benecaster’s own WordPress site can send — what triggers it, the template file that renders it, and where to read more. This is a directory, not a replacement for the pages it links to: Automated Emails explains each one for a podcaster audience, Email Types Reference covers the filter and action hook families that target them, and Billing Emails covers the built-in membership billing emails in full, including default copy.
Scope: emails sent by your own site only. Every row below is dispatched by the plugin’s own EmailQueue, through your own SMTP connection. It does not include emails benecaster.com sends you directly about your account (threshold warnings, plan changes, payment-failure notices) — those never pass through your site and have no template file to override. See the “Emails Benecaster Sends You From benecaster.com” section of Automated Emails for that list. Add-on-only email types are excluded too (broadcast, episode_notification) — see Email Types Reference for those. The one exception is the Analytics Dashboard digests, listed at the end of this page.
Subscriber Emails
Sent to a listener about their feed, their tier or a donation, whichever membership setup the show uses.
| Type string | Sent when | Template file | Related docs | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Welcome | welcome |
A subscriber’s feed token is generated for the first time | templates/emails/welcome.php |
How Feed Tokens Work |
| Token Reset | token_reset |
An admin resets a feed token with Reset and send email (a subscriber’s own reset shows the new URL on the account page and sends nothing) | templates/emails/token-reset.php |
Token Reset |
| Feed Link | feed_link |
A podcaster presses Email link on a subscriber’s panel to re-send the feed URL they already have | templates/emails/feed-link.php |
Subscribers REST API |
| Tier Change | tier_change |
A subscriber’s tier is updated — upgrade, downgrade, admin change, or a scheduled plan change landing. Names the plan they left and the plan they moved to, on membership-plugin and Built-in Membership shows alike | templates/emails/tier-change.php |
How Subscriber Limits Work |
| Donation Thank-You | donation_thank_you |
A Listener Support donation is logged and a donor email address is available | templates/emails/donation-thank-you.php |
Setting Up Listener Support (Stripe Mode) |
Welcome, Token Reset and Tier Change can each be switched off per show, at Benecaster → Shows → [show] → Subscription → Welcome and Feed URL Emails (works under any bridge). A switched-off email is never built, so it never reaches the benecaster_email_should_send filter. The Welcome switch is the one exception that never fully applies — it never stops a follower’s welcome email, since that’s a follower’s only route to their feed URL (operator ruling). Donation Thank-You has no per-show switch.
Feed Link and Token Reset both carry a feed URL, and they do opposite things. Feed Link resets nothing: it re-sends the URL already in the subscriber’s podcast app, so the app keeps working. Token Reset follows a reset: the old URL has stopped working and the subscriber has to set the podcast up in their app again. Feed Link has no per-show switch, because it is only sent when a podcaster asks for it, and subscribers cannot unsubscribe from it.
Built-in Membership Billing Emails
Sent to subscribers of a show on Built-in Membership, about their payments, renewals, price changes and scheduled plan changes.
| Type string | Sent when | Template file | Related docs | |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Optional; a configurable number of days before a subscriber’s first renewal at a new price | templates/emails/price-change-reminder.php |
Built-in Membership Billing Emails |

Built-in Membership Billing Emails |
| Plan Change Scheduled | tier_switch_scheduled |
A built-in membership subscriber schedules a move down, or to a tier at the same price. Tier Change follows when the move lands. Not sent for an upgrade, which lands at once and sends only Tier Change | templates/emails/tier-switch-scheduled.php |
Built-in Membership Billing Emails |
| Move to Free Plan Scheduled | free_tier_switch_scheduled |
A built-in membership subscriber chooses the show’s free plan from their account page. Tier Change follows when the move lands; Subscription Cancelled is never sent for it | templates/emails/free-tier-switch-scheduled.php |
Built-in Membership Billing Emails |
| Billing Address Needed for Tax | tax_address_needed |
Stripe Tax can no longer work out the tax for a built-in membership subscriber’s billing address, so their renewals are charged without tax. Sent once when it happens, not at every untaxed renewal | templates/emails/tax-address-needed.php |
Built-in Membership Billing Emails |
The five above (Subscription Receipt through Subscription Cancelled) can each be switched off per show, at the same Subscription tab’s Subscriber Billing Emails section. Same rule: a switched-off email is never built. Billing Change Scheduled, Plan Change Scheduled, Move to Free Plan Scheduled and Billing Address Needed for Tax have no per-show switch.
Of the three price-change emails, only the reminder has a switch — price_change_notice and price_change_cancelled always send, because they are the notice itself. All three are transactional, in UnsubscribeManager::TRANSACTIONAL_TYPES — as are Billing Change Scheduled (cadence_switch_scheduled), Plan Change Scheduled (tier_switch_scheduled), Move to Free Plan Scheduled (free_tier_switch_scheduled) and Billing Address Needed for Tax (tax_address_needed): each describes the subscriber’s own billing, so a marketing opt-out does not stop it, and none carries an unsubscribe link.
Emails to the Site Admin
Sent to the site’s admin email address (Settings → General → Administration Email Address), not to a subscriber, so there is no subscriber context and no unsubscribe link.
| Type string | Sent when | Template file | Related docs | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sales Passed US$1,000 | tax_threshold_nudge |
A show’s built-in membership sales, after tax and refunds, pass US$1,000 (or about the same in other currencies) in the calendar year. At most once a year per show, and never while Stripe Tax is active in the show’s Stripe account or while the show is in test mode | templates/emails/tax-threshold-nudge.php |
Customizing Email Templates |
It has no per-show switch. It is transactional; to stop it, return false from benecaster_email_should_send_tax_threshold_nudge.
Promote to Bridge Emails
Sent to subscribers the Promote to Bridge wizard moved from Built-in Membership to a membership plugin: one before their grace period ends, and one if it ends without re-authorization.
| Type string | Sent when | Template file | Related docs | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Promote Grace Reminder | promote_grace_reminder |
About 7 days before a promote-to-bridge grace period expires | templates/emails/promote-grace-reminder.php |

| Promote Grace Expired | promote_grace_expired |
A promote-to-bridge grace period elapses without re-authorization | templates/emails/promote-grace-expired.php |

Account Provisioning Emails
These support follower signup and accounts created for subscribers, plus one account-identity change outside signup. None of them get a per-show on/off toggle. New Account — Set Password, Already Following, and Email Verification ARE registered in EmailTypeRegistry (with unsubscribable: false), so they appear in the Email Editor add-on’s template manager — registration just isn’t wired to a settings-page toggle yet. Follower — Confirm Signup is the one exception: it’s dispatched the same way, through EmailManager::send(), so the filter families above still work on it, but it has no EmailTypeRegistry entry and so doesn’t surface in the Email Editor’s list. All four can be overridden with the standard PHP template override system regardless.
| Type string | Sent when | Template file | Related docs | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New Account — Set Password | guest_password_set |
A WordPress account is created for a subscriber rather than by them: bulk enrollment, a subscriber added by hand, or a donation that signs the donor up. Not sent for [benecaster_subscribe] signups, where the subscriber sets a password on the form |
templates/emails/guest-password-set.php |
Customizing Email Templates |
| Already Following | already_following |
Someone submits the follower signup form with an address that already follows the show | templates/emails/already-following.php |
Free Followers |
| Follower — Confirm Signup | follower_confirm |
The double opt-in step of a new follower signup, sent before a token is created — the link both confirms the address and completes signup | templates/emails/confirm-follower-signup.php |
Free Followers |
| Email Verification | email_verification |
A subscriber changes their email address on the account page — sent to the new address with a single-use link that promotes it; the old address stays active until the link is clicked | templates/emails/verify-email.php |
Your Account Page |
Add-on Emails to the Site Admin
From the Analytics Dashboard add-on, only while it is on. These go to the administrators you tick under Digest emails, and have their own Unsubscribe link: a subscriber opt-out never stops them. Template for all three: the add-on’s templates/emails/analytics-digest.php, which a theme can override at benecaster/emails/analytics-digest.php.
| Type string | Sent when | Subject | Related docs | |
