Merge Tag Library
A merge tag is a {{double-brace}} placeholder that Benecaster fills in for each reader. The Email Editor offers only the tags the email you’re designing can use, so you never have to guess a name.
Two Ways to Add One
Type {{ in Subject, a Text block, or a block’s text or address field. A list opens with each tag and what it outputs. Arrow keys and Enter or Tab pick one, and Escape closes the list.
Merge tags this email can use, on the email’s page, lists the same tags with descriptions, and is open by default. Click one to put it in the field you last clicked into.
An address field, such as a button’s, offers only tags that hold a web address, and the tag you pick replaces what’s in the field.
The Settings tab’s Header text and Footer text don’t take merge tags, because one wrapper goes around every email and the tags differ by email.
When a Tag Has No Value
A tag that belongs to the email and has no value for this reader prints nothing. If that would leave a stray line or button, make the block conditional with Show this block when…. Any other text in double braces, including a tag that belongs to a different email, stays exactly as you typed it.
In a preview, a tag with no sample value stays in braces, and the page says so.
Tags From Other Add-ons
A tag declared through benecaster_email_merge_tag_catalog appears in the list automatically. Developers: give a web-address tag the kind url, or the address fields won’t offer it.
The full list for each email is on Email Merge Tags.
