[benecaster_subscriber_count]
Displays the current active subscriber count for a show. Designed for social proof placement on marketing or landing pages. Does not render if the count is below the minimum threshold (prevents showing low numbers that undercut credibility).
The count comes from Benecaster’s own record of who currently has access, not from your membership plugin. In practice the two agree; where they differ it is usually because somebody was added or removed on the membership side and the sync has not caught up yet.
Output is filterable via benecaster_subscriber_count_output.
On a multi-show site this shortcode usually sits on a marketing page, outside any show or episode page, so give it an explicit show_id there.
Parameters
| Name | Type | Default | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
show_id |
int |
— | No | ID of the show to count. Optional: on a show or episode page it resolves to that show, and anywhere else on a single-show install to the only show. On a multi-show site, on a page that is neither, it renders nothing. |
tier |
string |
— | No | Restrict count to subscribers on a specific tier slug. Omit to count across all tiers. A listener who cancelled that tier but kept episodes they bought is not counted on it, since they no longer hold the tier; the count without `tier` still includes them. |
type |
string |
paying
|
No | Which subscribers to count. Options: paying (paid-tier only), total (paying + free tier), free (total minus paying). "Paying" is a deny list, not `token_type = 'subscriber'`: it counts any token type Benecaster doesn't exempt (`follower` and `purchaser` are exempt) on a non-free tier, including a custom type an add-on defines. `free` follows from the same definition — a non-standard, non-exempt token type on a paid tier counts as paying and is not included in `free`. `free` is worked out as total minus paying, so a listener who only holds episodes they bought appears in the `free` figure, exactly as a follower already does. |
format |
string |
full
|
No | Number format. Options: full (e.g. 1,247) or compact (e.g. 1.2k). |
minimum |
int |
10
|
No | Minimum count required to render. If actual count is below this threshold, the shortcode outputs nothing. |
label |
string |
— | No | Optional text appended after the number, e.g. 'active subscribers'. |
Example
<!-- Social proof badge, compact format, paying subscribers only -->
[benecaster_subscriber_count show_id="3" format="compact" label="subscribers"]
<!-- Only render if 50+ paying subscribers -->
[benecaster_subscriber_count show_id="3" minimum="50" label="people listening"]
